A proposed cellphone tower project is stirring up controversy in one Mahopac neighborhood.
Rob Cavallaro says he and his neighbors on the dead-end street of Walton Drive are deadlocked with the Town of Carmel, which approved a 140-foot-tall cell tower at the edge of the Maple Estates Condominium property.
"Directly in front, feet from our doors, we don't want it," he says.
Residents in the area claim that they weren't informed about the tower until they received a letter on July 1.
Cavallaro say he fears that the tower will not only be an eyesore, but also lower his property value, bring major construction to his normally quiet street and affect his health.
"I believe the FCC is in denial about the amount of radiation these things actually expose," he says.
The project is the result of a settlement between Homeland Towers, Verizon and the town of Carmel, after residents near two previously proposed locations successfully stopped those plans.
"We are just so outraged that the other two sites had ample notice and had the chance to be heard," Cavallaro says.
The Town of Carmel did not respond to News 12's requests for comment, but said in a letter to residents, "The Town Board understands that it is virtually impossible to make the decisions and determinations of this difficult process without impacting some number of residents..."

Walton Drive residents say they don't want to be impacted at all and are now raising money to take their fight to court.
