Several Orange County towns and villages are petitioning Gov. Andrew Cuomo for a containment zone in Palm Tree as authorities struggle to control crowds and coronavirus cases continue to rise.
Hundreds of mourners gathered outside a synagogue on Garfield Avenue for a funeral in Palm Tree Sunday, despite a statewide lockdown and executive order banning crowds.
Monroe Supervisor Tony Cardone called the gathering "disrespectful" and dangerous amidst efforts to contain the COVID-19 crisis and said state police were called in to disperse the crowd.
His town is one of seven neighboring communities now petitioning Gov. Andrew Cuomo for a containment zone in Palm Tree, as photos and videos showing large crowds in the Hudson Valley's Hasidic communities continue to surface.
County data shows Palm Tree has the most cases of coronavirus in Orange County as authorities struggle to keep large gatherings at bay ahead of Passover.
It's a concerning combination for the public and COVID-19 patients like Robert Hall, of Wallkill, who says the virus has infected everyone in his household of six and shut down his business, while they're following quarantine orders at home.
"It enrages me to see these groups out there. They're just going about their day and putting everyone in danger," he says.
Gov. Cuomo previously denied Orange County's request for a containment zone in Palm Tree, similar to New Rochelle.
So far, there's no word from the governor's office about the continued concerns or the petition.
Cuomo did address statewide concerns Monday about ongoing gatherings and crowds and authorized fines to be doubled for ignoring his executive order.
