In an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced New York schools will remain closed until April 29 and state Regents exams are canceled.
Rockville Centre School Superintendent Dr. Bill Johnson agrees with the governor's decision to extend school closings for another two weeks.
"I am personally thankful that it's done incrementally," said Johnson. "It still opens up the door for possible return in May or in June and I think what it does is it gives us plenty of time to put together lessons for our children in the classrooms."
State Board of Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa said, "The COVID-19 pandemic has put a tremendous burden on many New Yorkers and our schools and children are no exception. The regulations passed by the Board today will allow schools, students and professionals much-needed flexibility while they adapt to this rapidly evolving situation."
Parents, including Jeanette Deuterman of Bellmore, say the decision lifts a huge weight off students and teachers' shoulders during this crisis.
"Because teachers felt like they had to stay on track to get them prepared for a high stakes assessment that's part of graduation requirements and everything. That's so significant to take off of everyone's plate," said Deuterman.
The Board of Regents is expected to announce guidelines pertaining to the cancellation of Regents exams within the next couple of days.
Another set of Regents exams were scheduled to be administered in August but the status of those are unclear.
