Police are hoping the public can shed light on why Kelly Owen, a 27-year-old nursing student and mother, was killed inside her home Wednesday in South Farmingdale.
Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick presented a photo of the victim during a news conference Thursday and asked for the public’s input.
“Anyone that has any information or knows Kelly or saw seen her in the South Farmingdale area, might have seen her with any kind of person, males or females, or knows anything about her, her habits – please get in touch with us,” said Fitzpatrick.
Sources say Owen was strangled and found deceased in her own bed.
Police said she got her 6-year-old daughter ready for school at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning and was found dead around 3:40 p.m. Police said there were “no obvious signs of a break-in.”
Owen's family told reporters Friday that Kelly’s death was “not news” but a family tragedy. On social media, Owen's friends expressed their grief, calling her a “beautiful soul” that was an “honor to know.”
Police are urging anyone with information about Kelly Owen's whereabouts during the day on Wednesday or any other tips to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
Detective Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick speaks about Owen's death at the 3:26 mark in this news conference.
