A typical morning drive for one Coram resident turned into a ride he will never forget.
Michael Koemm, of Coram, was on his way to work as a veterinarian assistant Tuesday when he suddenly saw an 8-week-old puppy tossed from a moving SUV on Route 25 in Calverton.
"I was heartbroken, devastated and very upset," says Koemm. "She came right into my arms. I had a blanket in my car, and I put her in the blanket and she fell asleep."
Koemm says the incident happened at a time when there were not many cars on the road and snow was falling.
As News 12 has reported, a string of similar incidents have occurred in Suffolk. Several dogs and cats were tossed from moving vehicles over the summer.
The pit bull mix was immediately taken to the East End Veterinary Center in Riverhead where Koemm works and was given a clean bill of health.
"She doesn't have any wounds from her fall, she doesn't have any fractures or internal problems from her fall because Michael picked her up so quickly," says Dr. Jennifer Muscarello, of East End Veterinary Center. "There's no frostbite issues with her either."
Koemm plans to adopt the puppy and name her Elsa after the character from Frozen.
So far no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. SPCA investigators are now searching for a dark-colored SUV with the partial license plate TZR.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk SPCA at 631-382-7722.
