The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame announced its 2019 inductees Thursday night and honored two native Long Islanders killed in the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Among the inductees are legendary sports broadcaster and Commack native Bob Costas, who currently does play-by-play and hosts an interview show for the MLB Network. He says he's honored to be recognized by the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame.
Costas, a 1970 Commack High School South graduate, says his Long Island roots played a big role in paving the way to his award-winning sportscaster career.
The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame also inducted two Long Islanders for their heroism off the playing field. Scott Beigel and Aaron Feis were posthumously honored for selflessly giving their lives to protect students when a gunman opened fire inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Beigel, a Dix Hills native, and Feis, a West Islip native, were both teachers and sports coaches. Beigel's mother, Linda Schulman, accepted the honor for her son.
Eleven inductees were honored for their contributions in the fields of professional and amateur sports.
