Cold temperatures made for a slow start to mosquito season, but warm and wet weather ahead could mean a quick pickup -- and the city of Milford is getting ready.

Milford is launching its 2019 mosquito control program, which involves identifying and treating breeding sites like ponds, storm drains and other standing bodies of water.

"Out of the last 21 days, we've had 14 days with recordable rainfall which mean the breeding season for mosquitos is just ramping up," says Mayor Ben Blake.

But officials say they cannot protect the city from mosquitos alone. Officials caution residents to drain or dump standing water, dress in light, loose clothing and use repellents. Anyone concerned about areas in their yards can call the city to have someone come in for an inspection.
