Police search for suspect shuts down Hempstead Turnpike
A large police presence shut down part of Hempstead Turnpike Monday as police searched for a suspect at the Capri Motel.
The police presence blanketed the area, including the nearby Cherry Valley Shopping Center. The SWAT team was on scene, but police say ultimately the suspect they were looking for was not at the hotel.
Police are being tight-lipped about the investigation, but the search came hours after Nassau authorities responded to two shootings – one of which was fatal.
Detectives say a man was shot in the head and killed on Terrace Avenue in Hempstead at 2:45 am. News 12 is told a second person was shot in the stomach and taken to the hospital. Their identities have not been released.
Less than nine hours later, a man was shot in the stomach in New Cassel. The suspected gunman in the New Cassel shooting is described as male, 6 feet tall, weighing about 150 pounds and wearing a blue and white jump suit. It is believed that is the suspect that police were searching for at the Capri Motel.
Police are only saying at this point that the search was part of an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
