New Jersey residents and officials alike are preparing for predicted back-to-back winter storms this week.
The National Weather Service says a weak area of low pressure will pass through the area late Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, bringing snow, rain and ice. Another system is expected to bring snow Saturday night into Sunday.
Gov. Phil Murphy held a news conference Wednesday to assure the public that the state is prepared for the snow, following a lackluster performance by state crews during a major snowstorm in November.
The governor said that his crews will take the necessary precautions to protect the state and he blew off any criticism that the state has been overcompensating since the November debacle.
“We are concerned. We had a mini-storm cabinet meeting after the State of the State [Tuesday,]” Murphy said.
Murphy said that even he was frustrated by the lack of preparation during the November snowstorm, which left thousands of New Jersey residents stranded in traffic for hours.
“It’s not just a reaction to November…We are one of densest states in the nation. We‘ve got to be able to move people around,” Murphy said. “If that means we have to over-prepare, we’re going to over-prepare.”
Murphy said that it costs about 17 cents per mile to brine state roadways, so he says that he is not worried about overspending this early in the winter season.
Updates about what the state is doing to prepare for the storm can be found at the state website.
