SPCA: Farm under investigation for lack of food, water, shelter for animals

WASHINGTONVILLE -

A 50-year-old-farm in Orange County is under investigation over several alleged violations, including claims it lacks sufficient shelter for their animals.

According to the Hudson Valley SPCA, Eggberts Free Range Farm on Toleman Road in Washingtonville is under investigation for lack of food, water and shelter.

The farm has nearly 90 animals, including chickens and sheep.

Animal investigator Eugene Hect says the SPCA is pressing charges in New Windsor court against the family farm, which claims it's been there for five decades.

New Windsor Code Enforcement says the farm is also in violation of code regulations because the business is operating in a non-farm zone.

The department shared pictures with News 12 depicting dilapidated conditions on the farm.

Despite the run-down facade, one of the farmers tells News 12 that the animals have a clean bill of health. The SPCA says that's not good enough.

“If they could stay, just put up the proper shelter for them and make sure they have food, that's it,” says Hect.

The farm will need approval  from New Windsor Town Council to continue operating. If that request is denied, it will have to shut down.
