A proposal that would move a homeless shelter from North Water Street in Peekskill to a vacant building on Washington Street is not sitting well with some residents.
More than 50 people came forward to the Peekskill City Council to urge them to vote no on the move of the CHHOP (Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill) shelter.
There are 171 homes, more than 20 businesses and five school bus stops within 800 feet of the proposed location, and many said they are concerned for their safety.
According to documents residents say they seized from the Peekskill Police Department, over 100 calls were made to the shelter's current location in a 12-month span – activity they say they don't want near their homes.
On one page of CHHOP's website, they report the top two calls were for medical visits, with very few related to arrests or crime.
However, the list does include calls for unwanted parties, emotionally disturbed people, suspicious activity and disputes.
Residents say they are worried about property values, suffering business and squatters at nearby properties or in parks.
They told News 12 that they are not against a homeless shelter in Peekskill, but not at the proposed location.
News 12 reached out to Peekskill Mayor Andre Rainey and CHHOP for comments, but hasn’t heard back.
