Snow falls through evening commute, ice lingers into night

YONKERS -

As snow began falling before the evening commute Friday, drivers prepared for the worst, and even after it stopped, slush threatened to form ice patches.

Earlier in the evening on the Saw Mill Parkway traffic was moving well, at least until snow began accumulating.

Forecasts predicted snowfall throughout the evening rush until about 8 p.m., so some commuters left work early. Conditions appeared to have improved by then, after snowplows cleared the roads.

Schools in Brewster sent children home early, and after-school activities in the Chappaqua and Carmel school districts were canceled. In Yonkers, officials canceled events at the city's parks and for after-school programs.

But police blamed the slick roads for several accidents throughout the evening, and wet roads and slush lingered as temperatures plummeted, threatening to leave icy hazards behind

"Hopefully the roads will be clear by the time I go to work at 4 a.m," said Letsh Dubose, of Yonkers.

Drivers are urged to proceed with caution and be careful of slick spots.
