Long Island Reps. Tom Suozzi and Peter King delivered a grim assessment of the House GOP tax reform plan today as they stood by their decision to vote against the bill.
King, a Republican, and Suozzi, a Democrat, say the bill would hurt Long Island’s middle class.
“Almost every expert I’ve spoken to says that it’s definitely going to be negative for many taxpayers on Long Island,” said King.
“If you're making $100,000 in parts of the country, you are on easy street,” said Suozzi. “If you're making $100,000 on Long Island you're not doing that great.”
It’s up to the Senate now to decide the fate of tax reform. President Donald Trump tweeted today about Democrats and the efforts to pass tax reform.
Trump may be trying to squeeze Democrats, but it’s his own party that could ultimately torpedo the bill. Right now in the Senate, there are 52 Republicans, 46 Democrats, and two Independents who generally vote with the Democrats. So assuming every Democrat and Independent votes against tax reform, like what happened in the House, the bill can't afford to lose the support of more than two Republicans. There are already six Republican senators who are expressing concerns with the bill.
