Leaders seek to minimize impact of Indian Point Energy Center closurePosted: Updated:
Westchester County leaders are taking initiatives to ensure the impacts of closing the Indian Point Energy Center are kept at a minimum.
Westchester County Board of Legislators Majority Leader Catherine Borgia introduced a resolution Friday outside of the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan.
If approved by the full board, approximately 1,000 local energy employees could be hired to assist with the decommissioning of the plant and the economic redevelopment of the area. Those employees would also receive job counseling to advance their careers elsewhere.
In addition, the New York state Department of Education will also assist the Hendrick Hudson School District to help recoup tax revenue losses.
"The state was involved in the closing, however, we know the impacts will be felt in the host community and throughout Westchester County,” says Borgia.
Legislator Borgia says the full board is expected to vote Monday on the resolutions.
Indian Point is expected to be fully shut down by 2021.
