Mount Vernon city employees had trouble cashing their paychecks Friday morning.

Cellphone video shows the Department of Public Works commissioner getting turned away after bank employees told him there were insufficient funds in the city's account. He says he was able to cash his check before 12 p.m.

Mayor Richard Thomas says the incident impacted roughly 700 employees in police and fire departments along with Department of Public Work workers. He says the bank informed the city that every single check that was cut would not be honored unless they got a form from the comptroller.

But the city's comptroller, Maureen Walker, says the issue appeared to have been an electronic error and only impacted a dozen employees. She says the funds were wired to the bank the night before and that most of the city employees use direct deposit, so they weren't affected.

This situation appeared to be another sign of the ongoing friction between the mayor and comptroller. There was no immediate reason given for the discrepancy.

News 12 has been told that many of the affected employees were able to rectify the problem before the end of the day.
