Yorktown students evacuated after potentially explosive situation

Fire trucks rushed to the Strang Middle School in Yorktown Wednesday after the odor of gas was detected in the building.

Almost 1,000 students were evacuated shortly after 9 a.m. and taken to the Yorktown High School, located on the same campus. School officials say it is the second time in two weeks a smell of gas was found in the facility. They say standard protocol calls for the evacuation in that circumstance.

Firefighters are combing the building with gas meters to pinpoint exactly where the gas is coming from. The gas company is also on hand to check for leaks.
