Pit bull saved, owner collared in dog fighting arrest

Police in Yonkers say they rescued a female pit bull from a life of torture and fight training at the hands of her owner.

Thirty-one-year-old Michael Morales, of Yonkers, is facing felony charges for allegedly training his dog, Lace, to fight. Morales is also charged with torturing and injuring his dog, which are misdemeanors. The felony charge could send him behind bars for up to four years and he could be fined up to $25,000.

Yonkers police say they got the tip Tuesday that Morales was training his dog in the woods at the edge of Tibbits Brook Park. Police arrested Morales after allegedly seeing him in the act.

Two-year-old Lace looks to be in good health, according to the manager at the city shelter. The dog will be taken to the Westchester Animal Hospital Thursday to be examined.
