Suspicious item temporarily halts Metro-North
Metro-North Railroad halted train service on the New Haven line for about 90 minutes Tuesday after a suspicious item was reported in Rye.
According to officials, the item was found at around 11 a.m. by the person who cleans the Rye train station. Metro-North spokesman Dan Brucker says it turned out to be a spare part from an automobile transmission inside an oily shopping bag.
Assistant Chief Stephen Connor, of the MTA Police, says the contents of the suspicious package had the appearance of a landmine. Rye police shut down roads surrounding the station, and all 15 New Haven line trains were stopped or delayed from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Investigators will try to trace the auto part that was found on the Rye platform back to its owner.
"At first blush, it's as if someone instead of trying to recycle and dispose of a car part properly, left it at the station," Connor says.
