WTC rescue recalls 2011 Yonkers incident
A Yonkers firefighter knew exactly what FDNY firefighters were going through as they rescued two window washers from the side of 1 World Trade Center.
Juan Lizama and Juan Lopez dangled from their scaffold Wednesday for about 90 minutes until firefighers were able to cut a hole in a window and pull the two of them to safety.
Firefighter Mike Giroux knew exactly what the FDNY was facing. In 2011, Giroux rappelled down the side of an apartment building to rescue two window washers stranded 27 stories up.
"We always talk about training, training, training, but that day you saw it pay off," says Giroux, who has trained with members of the FDNY.
Lizama and Lopez are both reportedly doing well. The accident with their scaffolding remains under investigation.
