Police in Orange County have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a shoemaker in Port Jervis.
Friends and community members have created a makeshift memorial of flowers and handwritten notes at the Port Jervis shoe store where Joseph Kucher, 77, was found Friday after being assaulted and sustaining severe head injuries. Kucher, who owned the Front Street store for 40 years, died Saturday at Orange County Regional Hospital.
Police announced at a press conference Monday that Dennis McBee, 29, has been charged with second-degree murder. He was taken into custody in Pennsylvania within 24 hours of the attack on unrelated charges.
Police sources say Kucher may have walked in on McBee burglarizing his shop.
Community members have offered fond remembrances of Kucher and called for the maximum punishment for his killer.
