City of Newburgh to hold gun buyback program on Saturday
Newburgh officials are offering a gun buyback program in the wake of two young residents being shot and injured in two separate violent attacks overnight.
Authorities say a 16-year-old boy was shot in the back Sunday night at the corner of William Street and Benkard Avenue at around 11:45 p.m. Sunday.
About 15 minutes later, police say a 20-year-old was shot in an unrelated shooting in front of his house on Chambers Street.
While some residents feel the guy buyback program won't stop the violence, officials say dozens of weapons were recovered in Newburgh during a buyback last year.
This year's program will offer a grocery gift card in exchange for firearms.
It will be held Saturday at the House of Refuge on Broadway from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will run until June 30.
After Saturday's event, anyone trading in a firearm can do so at the city of Newburgh's police department.
