Group looks to revitalize Yonkers neighborhood

Manhattan has SoHo, Brooklyn has DUMBO and now a group of property owners in Yonkers has received a huge financial boost from the state to help create a similar area for artists in the city.

Austin Rose and his family at R.J. Rose Realty are leading the charge to revitalize areas along Nepperhan Avenue, and are looking to rename it the Yonkers Carpet Mills Arts District.

The realty firm and a group of other property owners recently received a $500,000 capital grant to help turn buildings like the historic Alexander Smith carpet facility into a creative haven for artists.

The 170,000-square-foot facility houses loft space for artists, movies have been shot there and the Rose family has their home furnishings, filled with antiques from China, on the ground floor.

R.J. Rose Realty will also use some of the grant money to help with the renovation of a recently purchased historic building at 179 Saw Mill River Road.
