Officials call for repair to unsafe roadways
Labor union members, along with local and state politicians, gathered Wednesday on the Murray Avenue Bridge in Yonkers in support of making infrastructure improvements.
Those at the rally pointed out the need to repair unsafe roadways, shore up crumbling bridges and begin projects to improve the state's infrastructure.
Officials say that while the Murray Avenue Bridge in Yonkers is not falling down, it does need serious help.
The grassroots group Rebuild New York Now is leading the charge to increase public awareness that everyone suffers when roads, bridges, schools and other vital infrastructure aren't up to par. It says the investment won't be cheap.
"We're talking about $28 billion to $30 billion over the next five years to address the projects," says Ross Pepe, of Rebuild New York Now. "It's important not only for the work that needs to be done, but for economic development, and it helps the community to thrive and grow."
The coalition is asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers to think about those things when negotiating next year's budget.
Rebuild New York Now is currently on a statewide tour to gain support for their message.
