Sinkhole opens up near Putnam County deli

A large sinkhole opened up in the ground right next to a Putnam County deli Friday night.

The crater swallowed up a small section of the parking lot outside of the Carmel General Store on Route 311.

The sinkhole has not caused any damage to the inside of the store.

As a safety precaution, fire crews are requiring the business to remain closed until inspectors arrive to examine the scene.

The owner says a full safety inspection of the store's foundation is expected to take place on Monday.
