New information unveiled on municipal ID program

New York City has released new information on its municipal ID program, ID NYC.

The card is accessible to all city residents, regardless of immigration status. The minimum age to apply for the free card is 14 and will remain valid for five years. The card also provides cultural perks, like free membership to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Those who want to apply must provide proof of identity and residency in New York City. Homeless New Yorkers without a permanent address can also get a card.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says the program will offer protections to keep personal information from being used fraudulently. The protections also extend to domestic violence victims, by keeping their address information confidential.

The cards will be available to the public starting Jan. 1.
