Group to develop markers for historic BX sites
A nonprofit group wants to make it easier for residents and visitors to find the historic sites around the South Bronx.
The Casita Maria Center and other groups developed the South Bronx Culture Trail in 2011. They have engaged artists to develop and install a series of distinctive physical markers that identify key locations in the cultural history of the region.
The center is asking Bronx residents to pick their favorite marker, which were designed by eight local artists and studios.
The winning entries will be placed at historic and iconic locations.
The designs include "Play Bronx," a structure that plays music and audio at every site, and "Shard of Bronx History," that uses transparent glass to help viewers literally peek into the past.
Residents can pick their three favorite marker designs by filling out a card and placing it in a box at the Casita Maria Center. The winning design will be chosen in January and will start being built next fall.
