The Stony Brook Fire Department held their annual fire prevention open house Saturday, providing the community a glimpse into how they serve and protect.

This year, the Fire Chief Scott Roberts decided to make it a bit more unique and inclusive so that kids with disabilities would be comfortable with the day’s events.

“It…gives us the opportunity to educate them in a way that we would otherwise not be able to,” says Roberts. 

Erin Zoldak, of Stony Brook, appreciated that effort.

“There's no sirens. There's nothing that will…get them uncomfortable,” she says.

Her kids and many others got to see what it's like to try to escape a fire in a home during a practice drill. There were also several demonstrations, including how to put out a grease fire on a stove.

Fire officials say they hope the open house gives everyone an opportunity to learn fire safety lessons they will never forget.
