The New York state Department of Education will be appointing a special monitor to the East Ramapo Central School District.

The DOE will pick up where the state Senate and Assembly left off by appointing a monitor who will take on an advisory role that involves overseeing the school board and fielding the mounting complaints from parents.

The special appointee will also oversee the district's budget and the board's financial decisions. Differing from what was proposed by local lawmakers earlier this year, the monitor will not have veto power of the school board.

There is no word yet on how much the monitor will be paid.

Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee (D-Suffern) tells News 12 that she is glad the state is finally responding to the problems plaguing the minority district in favor of private schools.

Community activists have accused the Orthodox Jewish-run school board of short-changing the district's minority population.

Yehuda Weissmandl, the school board president, will stand side by side with the DOE chancellor this Thursday to further discuss the monitor.

The hand-picked monitor is expected to start in September.
