Officials say they're teaming up with GE and AT&T to look into technology that will turn streetlamps into routers for free Wi-Fi networks and much more Monday in downtown Stamford.

Mayor David Martin says the antennas on the new streetlamps will help make his dream of high-speed public Wi-Fi a reality. 

They would also include weather indicators and sensors as well as a small camera that can track pedestrian and car movement in intersections, says Thomas Madden, the city's director of economic development.

Madden says that information will help Stamford adjust traffic patterns in real time to ease congestion on the roads. 

There are similar systems in place in cities such as San Francisco and San Diego.

The Board of Representatives will get a chance to see the new system Thursday, where they'll choose whether to approve 15 to 30 of the streetlamps as a pilot program later this summer.
