Spano talks economy amid calls to abolish county gov't
On the day of the "Abolish County Government" meeting in Yonkers, County Executive Andy Spano posted a video on the Internet, addressing the state of the local economy.
"I want to assure you that Westchester County government is well-prepared to meet the challenges ahead," Spano said in his two-minute address, which appeared Thursday on YouTube and on the county's Web site.
Spano also warned against taking "the drastic actions that would result in a loss of jobs or jeopardize vital county services."
According to Spano, Westchester is in better position than most governments because of steps taken two years ago to cut spending by $23 million.
The county executive's office denies the Internet address has anything to do with this week's public attack made by Spano's son, who appeared in a TV ad inviting people to attend a meeting by a group attempting to abolish county government and high taxes.
Political analyst Lawrence Otis Graham thinks the ad and David Spano's involvement in it have backfired.
"I think Andy was very wise to rise above it," he says. "And to also get back to the real issue."
