For the first time, Sen. Chris Murphy said he may call for President Donald Trump to be impeached.
Up until now, Murphy has been hesitant to call for impeachment. But he says the new whistleblower scandal surrounding the president may just be the tipping point.
"I have been reluctant to recommend impeachment to the House," said Murphy. "But I'm going to give some serious thought to my position on this matter in the coming days."
It all stems from a phone call between Trump and the leader of Ukraine. The president admits he raised corruption accusations against former Vice President Joe Biden's son -- claims that have never been substantiated. But Biden, who was vice president at the time, pushed Ukraine to replace the investigating prosecutor.
"What Biden did is a disgrace, what his son did is a disgrace," said Trump. "The son took money from Ukraine, the son took money from China. A lot of money from China."
"This has been debunked by everyone that has looked into it," said Murphy. "The prosecutor at the time was corrupt, through and through. Everyone was asking the Ukranians to get rid of him."
A member of the intelligence community was concerned enough about a phone call that he filed a whistleblower complaint. The Trump administration withheld military aid to Ukraine until the complaint became public.
In Hartford Monday, Murphy accused Trump of extorting a foreign leader for his own political gain.
"The president is admitting that he pressed the Ukranians to conduct these political investigations because he thinks he can get away with it," Murphy said.
Murphy wants Congress to get a copy of the whistleblower complaint right away. So far, Trump's director of national intelligence has refused to provide it because it contains a private conversation between two world leaders.
So far, Rep. Jim Himes is the only Connecticut politician calling for an impeachment inquiry.
