There were extra police officers at schools in the Rutherford School District Monday after a student allegedly threatened to “shoot up” one of the schools.

Rutherford police say that the student made the threat to a friend while chatting during an online video game. Police questioned the student and his family, who said that that threat was never going to be carried out.

Officials with the school district released a statement that said in part, “This student is being dealt with appropriately by police and school administration.”

But students said that they were still nervous to attend school Monday.

“There is no need for people to make threats. It’s a school, we should be safe,” said high school junior Jake Schuman.

"I think it's a little ridiculous now that people are still thinking it's a joke…it could happen so it's hard to know when it's a joke and when it's not,” said senior Sadie Link.

The student who allegedly made the threat did not attend school Monday.
