Schumer urges feds to approve bridge funding
New York's senior senator was in Westchester Thursday urging the government to approve funding to fix the crumbling Ashford Avenue Bridge in Ardsley.
The bridge crosses the Saw Mill River Parkway, connecting Ardsley and Dobbs Ferry.
Sen. Chuck Schumer reached down Thursday and picked up a piece of concrete from the bridge.
"When these fell, fortunately it didn't hit a car," he said.
Schumer was referring to an accident in 2012 where falling rock narrowly missed several cars traveling underneath the bridge on the Saw Mill River Parkway during rush hour.
He says there still haven't been any repairs and the holdup isn't money.
More than $23 million in state and Westchester County funds are waiting to be used. The county has submitted a plan, but Schumer says it's the Federal Highway Agency that's dragging its feet on approving the project.
Schumer says a repair plan was submitted in September and revised, but they're still waiting on federal approval.
The bridge was built in 1950.
