Roof collapses on cars in Ossining body shop
The roof of an auto body shop in Ossining collapsed Saturday afternoon under the weight of an accumulation of snow said Ossining Fire Chief Matthew Scarduzio.
There were no injuries, but cars stored inside a wing of the shop were destroyed.
Alexandra Nolan, the owner's wife, had walked out of the shop with the couple's 10-year-old son just five minutes before the roof toppled down, Scarduzio said.
If anyone had been inside, responders would have faced a recovery scenario, not a rescue, he added.
"I didn't think it snowed that much, but apparently it snowed that much," said shop owner Robert Nolan.
The one-story building has a main garage and a separate addition, which is where the roof came down, Scarduzio said.
Con Edison technicians disabled gas and electricity for the building.
Some building owners choose to shovel snow off roofs that are increasingly burdened by storms, Scarduzio said, but he cationed people to put safety first.
Nolan has been in business at this location since 1997. He said he has had setbacks related to the weather before, but will be back on his feet with business back to normal in no time.
