Rockland County has unveiled a new app to help fight crime.
The Tip 411 app allows people to use their smartphone, computer or tablet to anonymously submit a description of a crime they may have witnessed.
Tipsters can also include a picture or a video. Within seconds their alert is sent to area police departments, where officers can investigate.
"Nothing is traced as far as identifying the information. The people are signed a generic number, and then we respond in real time to that information. There is no way we can find out who that tipster is unless that tipster gives us that information," says Sgt. Earl Lorence.
By embracing the use of technology, officers are hopeful younger generations will be more willing to send tips.
"Basically anybody will have the ability to anonymously talk to law enforcement without any fear of reprisal,” says Rockland District Attorney Thomas Zugibe.
Officials say the app does not replace 911 if you need immediate assistance.
The app is available by searching "Rockland Co. DA" in the Apple Store or Google Play.
