Resignation rankles Rockland legislators
The resignation of Aaron Wieder as Democratic leader on the Rockland County Legislature is continuing to ripple through the county.
Wieder says he quit because a state monitor's report on the district is tinged with anti-Semitism.
"They feel that Orthodox Jews can't self govern and can't possibly be good neighbors without outside intervention," Wieder says.
The report was a proposal for a permanent monitor with veto power over the East Ramapo School Board. The board, which is dominated by members of the Orthodox Jewish community, has been accused of taking steps that help its private religious schools at the expense of public schools.
County Executive Ed Day, a Republican, says he hopes for improved relations between his administration and the legislators.
But he says Wieder's comments on the monitor were counterproductive.
Democratic State Sen. David Carlucci says the monitor's proposals are in no way anti-Semitic.
But Wieder and other members of Rockland's Orthodox community are vowing to fight that.
Weider's term as Democratic leader would have expired at the end of the year. A new leader will now be elected when the legislature reorganizes on Jan. 5.
