Residents on Linden Street in Yonkers are frustrated with the amount of trash piling up in front of their neighbor's homes.
They say it has been going on for months.
Empty boxes, garbage bags and old chairs are nearly reaching the second floor of at least one home in the area. Stray cats have also been seen playing around the trash.
Garbage trucks can’t pick up the trash because its located on private property. It's up to the people who live in the house to walk it to the curb so it could be cleared on the next garbage day.
Yonkers Commissioner of Public Works Thomas Meier told News 12 that a complaint must be called in through the Building Department. It will then go to the property and perform an inspection. If the items are considered hazardous material, it must be removed immediately. If not, residents could have up to 30 days to remove it. If the trash is not cleared by the deadline, the DPW will remove it, charging the residents for not cleaning up.
After News 12 spoke to Meier, he sent an inspector to the properties.
The department confirmed that some of the items outside must be cleared away. Public Works will now reach out to the properties' landlords to schedule a deadline.
