A dramatic rescue of a man from the Shark River was caught on camera.
A construction crew working on a home on Poole Avenue in Avon-By-The-Sea tells News 12 New Jersey that they began to hear cries for help Tuesday morning. They say that they then saw a man struggling in the middle of the Shark River.
Construction workers Franco Gallucio and David Gordon rushed out on a boat to help the man.
“I couldn’t let someone drown in front of me like that,” says Gordon.
Another worker started to record the situation on his phone, after calling 911.
“He was fighting for his life, slowing down. We threw him a safety device float that one of the officers gave us before we rowed out to him,” says Gallucio.
Belmar Police Officer Larry Kelly was also in the water in a kayak and helped with the rescue.
The men were able to get out to the victim and towed him back to shore. They estimate that he was in the water for about 20 minutes.
The 59-year-old man from Montclair was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment. He is expected to be OK.
Gallucio and Gordon have remained humble about the rescue and say that they aren’t heroes.
“I would expect anyone else to do the same,” Gordon says.
Avon-By-The-Sea police are investigating how the man ended up in the middle of the river.
