Rep. Lowey: $3M in funding heading to flood-prone community
Rep. Nita Lowey announced Friday that she has secured funds that will go toward a Clarkstown community plagued by floodwaters every time it rains.
According to the congresswoman, $3 million in federal funding will go toward the Klein Avenue Levee Improvement Project.
Raymond Stormes, who lives on Klein Avenue, says his entire block was underwater during Hurricane Irene in 2011.
"It looked like we were in a lake,” he says.
Stormes lives across from a pond that overflows with water from the Hackensack River during storms.
The town wants to elevate a berm it previously built around the river another 4 feet, and extend it around the pond.
Officials also plan to purchase four diesel pumps, aimed to eliminate floodwaters in a matter of hours.
Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann says the improvements are “going to take houses out of the flood zone here in West Nyack. They won't have to pay for flood insurance in the future."
The project is expected to be completed by next spring.
