Family and friends of the 44 Orange County residents killed on Sept. 11 honored them in a special ceremony in Montgomery Monday night.
Loved ones laid flowers at the memorial, which listed each of the names, 27 of which were firefighters.
Among those in attendance was the Bratton family, who lost their daughter Michelle. She worked on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center.
Michelle's mother, Mary, had the chance to call her daughter while she was trapped in the tower. She called herself "one of the lucky ones" for getting the chance to speak to her.
"When I picked up the phone, I heard her say 'Mom,' and I said 'Michelle where are you,' and she said 'Mom it's hot, Mom it's smoky, Mom please help me get out,' and I lost it," says Bratton.
Hundreds attended the ceremony, making sure that they would never forget that day 16 years ago.
"We just can't forget, I have a son in the Navy who flies F-18s and he's deployed. I have a stepson who's in the Army, he's deploying this week. We can't forget why we're doing this," said Alan Mack, the Deputy Commissioner of Orange County's Emergency Management Department.
