The Yonkers City Council has approved a move to stop drivers from running red lights.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer announced a plan to allow up to 50 red-light cameras in Yonkers as part of his new state budget proposal last month. The City Council overwhelmingly approved the measure Tuesday night.

The cameras would take a picture of a car crossing an intersection after the light has turned red. Officials would then send the motorist a ticket, using the vehicle?s license plate as identification.

Many believe the cameras not only prevent drivers from running a red light, but also reduce the number of crashes at intersections.

The state Legislature has to give the measure the green light before cameras are installed in Yonkers and other big cities around the state. The program also aims to bring in revenue for municipalities with the tickets it would generate.
