Recent violence in Mount Vernon has prompted the Southside Heights Association to take action.

At a rally Tuesday, the group called for the community to unify within the city. They say there is already tension between the West Indian community and the African-American community and that needs to end.

Pastor Troy DeCohen says crime is down, however, violent crime involving youths is on the rise. Leaders say the community needs to protect itself and identify problems before they arise. They hope through programs, targeted to teens, they might make the streets safer.
