Rally against drones held outside Rep. Lowey’s office
Protesters rallied against the use of drones outside Rep. Nita Lowey's office in White Plains Friday.
The protest was held to mark the first anniversary of an alleged US drone strike on a wedding party in Yemen. The protesters held a "die-in" and read the names of the 12 Yemenis who were reported dead after the strike.
The protesters from the group WESPAC claim Rep. Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) accepted money from weapons industrialists for her 2014 re-election campaign.
"We want to ask her why in her last campaign she took $95,000 from weapons-makers when she's voting on war and peace," said protester Tom Van Buren.
A spokesperson from Rep. Lowey's office addressed the crowd saying that the congresswoman is calling on Congress for a formal debate on any kind of authorization for use of military force.
The group responded by saying the statement did not acknowledge the collateral damage drones inflict on innocent civilians.
WESPAC says it is planning more protests.
