Residents can now experience a rainforest in the county, thanks to the Westchester County Park's latest addition.
The tropical rainforest is now on display after the county opened its first-ever glass house conservatory at Lasdon Park in Somers Tuesday.
The 28-foot-high facility will play host to a variety of exhibits and will be used for class trips, performances and even weddings.
The Westchester County Parks says the rainforest exhibit will help protect our environment.
"Every day, we lose hundreds if not thousands of acres of rainforests in the world…They moderate our climate, they provide medicine, they provide food,” says Ted Kowzlowski, of the Westchester County Parks Department.
The $1.3 million given out by the county to fund this project is, according to some, money well spent.
"It's so close to home and it's a beautiful place and it's a beautiful park and I can't wait to come back and see the inside of it,” says Lois Chanofsky, of Mahopac.
There are about 1,000 plants inside the conservatory. The Westchester County Parks Department says there are many more exhibits planned in the coming years.
The conservatory will hold their opening night gala on Wednesday night.
