Protesters lock themselves into shipping container
Pipeline protesters used a large steel shipping container to stall work on the new Algonquin project on Wednesday morning.
Two people locked themselves into a renewable-energy, 20-foot recycled shipping container and placed it at an entranceway to the work site of the Spectra Algonquin project in Peekskill around 5 a.m. Meanwhile, over a dozen protesters stood across the street holding signs.
The two protesters in the container, 64-year-old Janel Kendall, of Manhattan, and 29-year-old Lee Stewart, of Washington, D.C., were arrested by Peekskill police. The pair was charged with obstruction of governmental administration, disorderly conduct and trespassing.
The incident is the latest standoff between police and the activists. This past weekend, 21 people were taken into custody during a similar but much larger rally.
Pipeline opponents say it would run through residential communities and within 105 feet of Indian Point. The group wants federal regulators to take another look at the natural gas line project.
Spectra says it intends to prosecute, but protesters are showing no signs of giving up.
