Protesters demand new probe into cop's death
Clergy members and community leaders rallied at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday at the same time and place Mount Vernon Detective Christopher Ridley was fatally shot by four Westchester County cops in January. Ridley?s parents were joined by local black clergy members and members of a black police association. The protesters say they have no confidence in the grand jury investigation that cleared the four police officers of any wrongdoing or criminal offense.
They have called for another investigation by the state Attorney General?s Office or the U.S. Department of Justice. They believe the outcome would have been different if Ridley was white.Ridley was shot to death on Court Street in White Plains on Jan . 25. Ridley was trying to break up an assault between two men while he was off duty and in plain clothes. The four Westchester County police officers fired on Ridley after seeing the 23-year-old cop and another man wrestling over a handgun.
Witnesses testified before the grand jury that Ridley never identified himself as an officer to the other cops. They also testified that Ridley did not obey repeated requests to drop his weapon, possibly because he didn?t hear them. Ridley?s mother, Felita Bouche, says she is unhappy that the White Plains Police Department got to oversee the investigation. Westchester County Executive Andy Spano says he has no problem with the attorney general or the U.S. Department of Justice stepping in. Meanwhile, the Westchester County Police Department is reviewing its policies as a result of the friendly fire shooting. Interview with Rev. Franklyn Richardson at the rallyFamilyof slain Mt.
