Presidential race sees big casualties
With the presidential primary races heating up, some candidates are dropping out.
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination following a disappointing showing in all the primaries. Giuliani finished in a distant third-place in Florida Tuesday.
The former mayor said Wednesday he is now endorsing Sen. John McCain. McCain is pitted in a close race with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as the field heads into Super Tuesday, when 21 states, including New York, will hold primaries on Feb. 5. New York state Republicans have thrown their support toward McCain. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is also still in the race.
On the Democratic side, former Senator John Edwards has bowed out of the race, making it a two-candidate sprint for the finish between Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. Twenty-two states are up for grabs on Super Tuesday for the Democrats, including New York, as the candidates fight for delegates. Clinton won Tuesday?s Florida primary, but there were no delegates at stake in the contest.
