Pope's visit to NYC includes service at 9/11 museum
Pope Francis' visit to the city in late September is scheduled to include prayers at St. Patrick's Cathedral, an interfaith service at the Sept. 11 museum and a Mass at Madison Square Garden.
There also will be at least one and perhaps two motorcade promenades, with throngs of people expected to be looking for a glimpse of the pope.
"Never did I think I'd have the honor" of a papal visit, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan told reporters at St. Pat's, which Francis is expected to make his first stop once he arrives in the city from Washington on Sept. 24. "I'm a bit awed, a bit nervous."
The interfaith service at the Sept. 11 museum is scheduled for Sept. 25. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum said Tuesday that due to limited space a ticket lottery will be held for Sept. 11 families and survivors, first responders and recovery workers.
On the same day, Francis will address the United Nations General Assembly, visit an East Harlem Catholic school and say Mass at Madison Square Garden, officials announced Tuesday. Dolan said tickets for the events would be distributed through the archdiocese's parishes.
It's the pope's first trip to the United States. He's also stopping in Philadelphia on his Sept. 22-27 itinerary.
Dolan said Francis was intrigued by the idea of visiting the city but was nervous about his English speaking ability. Francis was born and spent the majority of his life in Argentina.
