Suffolk County police say a motorcyclist who led officers on a pursuit on the Long Island Expressway was in possession of a stolen handgun.
A 911 call around 11 p.m. Thursday reported a group of motorcyclists driving recklessly on the LIE near Exit 60. Police say the bikers took off as officers caught up to them.
Police say 31-year-old Manny Fernandez, of Patchogue, then peeled away from the group and exited at North Ocean Avenue. They say he sped north until crashing his motorcycle near Middle Country Road and Route 112. Officers say Fernandez then ran into some woods and hid.
Police used a K-9 and say they recovered a handgun reported stolen from Alabama and some clothing Fernandez shed as he fled.
Fernandez was hit with multiple reckless driving and weapons offenses. His attorney did not comment on the allegations but calls Fernandez a good man who's a father of four.
Police say they'll be on the lookout for the other motorcyclists riding with Fernandez.
Fernandez was held on $70,000 bond.
