Police identify man who drowned in Hudson River
Police have identified the Sleepy Hollow man who they say drowned in the Hudson River Friday afternoon while taking a swim.
They say 43-year-old William Cabrera swam about 50 feet off the coast of Pierson Park in Tarrytown. He then turned around and began to struggle before going underwater, according to his friends.
Tarrytown police responded at around 1:30 p.m. They pulled Cabrera out of the river and administered CPR.
He was transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:29 p.m.
The drowning has been ruled accidental.
In Pierson Park, where the drowning occurred, signs warn visitors not to barbecue or eat raw seafood, but no signs tell them to stay out of the water. An official told News 12 that people should not swim off the rocks as part of an "unofficial rule."
However, just down river in Yonkers a number of signs warn against swimming.
